Children’s charity the Oakland Foundation organised a pancake and batter mix donation for students at Ipsley CE RSA Academy to help celebrate Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday, on the 25th February.

Oakland Foundation trustee, Luke Attwell, said: “Providing pupils with free pancakes and batter mixes ensures the school can fully take part in this annual celebration and helps explain the background and origins of Shrove Tuesday.

“We are so thankful to May & Raeburn for the pancakes and SOS Wholesale for the batter mix donations and delighted to once again be able to support the school’s Shrove Tuesday celebrations and join everyone in having a ‘Flippin’ good time!”

Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday is the traditional day of feasting before Ash Wednesday, and the 40 days of Lent leading up to Easter. Shrove Tuesday enables Christians and those observing the Lent practice, to use up their surplus eggs and fats before embarking upon the traditional Lenten fast, with pancakes offering the perfect way of utilising these ingredients.

Dana Curtis, Director of Inclusion/Safeguarding at Ipsley commented: “We are very grateful to Oakland for the wonderful pancakes they have provided for our pupils. The pancakes were extremely popular and pupils wished they could have them every day!

“The batter mix will give our Year 5 pupils and their families the opportunity to practice their cooking skills together and continue the Shrove Tuesday fun and tradition.”

Year 7 pupils thoroughly enjoyed their pancake celebrations with Harvey commenting: “They’re so yummy” and Julia adding: “They’re very nice!”

May & Raeburn’s Sales Director Peter Massey said: “We are always happy to support Oakland’s work in the community and the celebration of Shrove Tuesday with the fun of pancake activities providing a fun way for pupils to learn more about this important tradition.”
