Kozy Shack Case Study
Kozy Shack is a family business which has been producing quality desserts since 1967. Based in Long Island, New York; they have production facilities in New York California and in Lough Egish, Co. Monaghan Ireland. Kozy Shack manufacture chilled desserts.
Kozy Shack’s extensive chilled dessert operation in Ireland required a company to deliver, store and pick product ready for end distribution to their UK retail customers.
Oakland International’s quality and focus throughout its entire Ireland and UK supply chain operations offered Kozy Shack with a BRC accredited storage and distribution solution capable of supporting Kozy Shack’s needs.
The products chosen by Kozy Shack for storage and distribution through Oakland’s supply chain operation were Sainsbury’s rice with custard, original, apple, strawberry and Sainsbury’s rice with vanilla. Delivered on full pallets, the chilled products were then stored and picked at Oakland’s depot in Redditch, Worcestershire, ready for onward distribution into Sainsbury’s UK RDCs.
Kozy Shack’s Mark Hancock stated: “Having a distribution hub in the UK has been essential to the success and growth of our business and Oakland have provided it for us. The efficiency of their operation has been excellent and allowed us to focus on new opportunities with new and existing customers, without having to worry about the supply chain which has been managed so well by Oakland.”
On entry at Oakland’s Worcestershire depot, product is booked on to Oakland’s WMS (Warehouse Management System) enabling stock movement flexibility from goods in, storage and picking (and occasionally through to Oakland’s in-house co-packing facility) after which stock is ready for dispatch. Bespoke reports are a key feature of Oakland’s WMS, allowing Kozy Shack to receive account management information on stock handling and expiry stock dates. Automated reports are produced and sent daily, detailing stock, confirmation of orders, expiration reports and any stock past minimum shelf life.
Kozy Shack’s orders are currently received into Oakland’s stock control department via EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) which allows Oakland to ensure products are picked to order. Orders may also be sent by email or fax.
Kozy Shack’s product is picked onto shared user pallets for delivery through Oakland’s network transport operation to the end retailer. Orders are effectively received on day 1 with delivery to all retailer depots being completed the following morning. Minimum shelf life on receipt (MLOR) requirements by individual retailers are strictly controlled by Oakland stock management systems.
Oakland International UK Operations Director Paul Ziolek, stated: “Our UK and Ireland hubs operate seven days a week and are currently, moving in excess of 6,000 pallets per week, we are well placed to support export expansion of Kozy Shack’s existing product ranges. Oakland’s close retailer relationship allows for closer links between retailers and Kozy Shack resulting in reduced wastage, improved service levels, no minimum order issues and no requirement for Kozy Shack to provide weekend stock control and administration cover for the account.”
